Merida chooses Controltech as a key partner
Created with the ambitious express intention of improving and revitalising Taiwan’s reputation in manufacturing, Merida has over a quarter of a century’s experience in building everything from urban machines and e-bikes to world-conquering race bikes.
Merida succeeded spectacularly in its original mission, and it goes without saying that Controltech is delighted to announce its new partnership with this dedicated, passionate brand.
Among a host of brilliant riders choosing Taiwanese bikes for 2018’s UCI road racing, the Bahrain-Merida Pro Cycling WorldTour Team can count Vincenzo Nibali – aka The Shark, one of
today’s most fearsome stage racers – the famed Italian climber Domenico Pozzovivo, and young gun Niccolo Bonifazio. Bonifazo has spent most of his professional career on Merida bikes, returning to the brand from a year with Trek Factory Racing.
Like the promising young Bonifazio, Controltech itself is actually renewing its association with Merida: the two companies previously enjoyed a successful partnership back in 2013. It’s a link that both companies know works.
Vitally, Merida dominates on more than tarmac. Its cross-country mountain bike racers enjoyed 16 highly successful years in top-level competition, taking more than 30 XCO World Cup wins, 15 World Championships and even Olympic Gold along the way. There’s no doubt that such world-dominating experience is the key to the strength and depth of Merida’s range, which covers everything from mountain bikes to gravel, road, trekking, e-bikes and kids’ bikes. It’s what makes Merida – whose founder Ike Tseng’s motto was ‘Move with passion and courage’ – such a perfect partner for Controltech.
Controltech is excited to be providing bars, stems and seatposts for cutting-edge bikes both off-road and on, including pro-level road racers such as the aero Reacto and the superlight Scultura. The new bikes were debuted at the 2018 Shanghai Cycle show, while Controltech components from across the comprehensive Merida range – such as the CLS gravel bar and the Cougar alloy bar – are available separately now.
Scott Sun, Controltech’s CEO, says: “Merida plays an vital role in the resurgence of Controltech, because Merida is as passionate as we are about products that lead the market in value and innovation. And of course, it’s a big player – Merida operates with a scale and scope I find very appealing.”
